We were only able to stay here one night, but we will definitely be back. The building is perfect-- clean, historic, and so comfortable. Judy, the owner, was a perfect hostess and having a luscious breakfast delivered to your door at your specified time was so luxurious. It was a special occasion, so Judy helped us to arrange an catered dinner right in our own schoolhouse. Stephanie the caterer was so accomodating and her preparations were gourmet. Her deep chocolate cake was truly amazing. The town of Prairie City is pleasant for strolling, but the highlight for us was Strawberry Mountain. We hiked in perfect weather to Strawberry Lake and next time will make sure we have time to hike further to the waterfall. It was gorgeous and we only came across one other hiker. The trailhead is very convenient to the schoolhouse. Also not far away are the Painted Hills, only 6 miles off the highway and well worth the side trip. We could easily have spent a week at the schoolhouse, living amidst the cattle, pony, and horses.

This b&b is out in the country. The hostess lives across the street and owns the Roan coffee shop in town. There was a key on the table inside the door and we just let ourselves in. The beds were great--all queen size with superb mattresses. The place is immaculate. We just used one bed of course. They had a very friendly cat,Lucky, who gave me my daily quota of petting. Then Tom, the neighbor dog, dropped by. The family is very friendly. We bought some ice cream in town and then found out the refrigerator was small with no freezer, so she let us put our ice cream in their freezer. If you want to cook there, the microwave works fine. Breakfast was great. One morning waffles and the next breakfast burrito fresh cooked. Very quiet and peaceful with no one around to bother you. Visit the train depot in Prairie City--now a magnificent little museum. The cemetery has some civil war graves that we found fascinating. Worth a couple of nights

It was all too good to be true, but since it was our honeymoon, it was just damn good. After deciding that the generic motels of John Day weren't our thing, we stopped in nearby Prairie City and asked a local pruning her roses if she knew of any nice bed and breakfasts. She suggested we ride down this country road and that there were two to choose from.||||We were stopped by a battalion of cows being moved to new pasture (a bona fide cultural experience for two urbanites), and asked the accompanying cowboy if we were on the right track.||||As the name suggests, the Riverside Schoolhouse is an old country school house that sits right on a fork of the John Day River. It has two rooms that are divided by a door that could be opened if you wanted to have a large group. Each unit is huge and has a kitchen and private bath. The rooms are cute and rustic without the frilly country craft.||||The proprietor is a very friendly woman and her husband and two sons are bona fide ranchers. The scenery is absolutely stunning. My wife and I walked along the country road and ended up talking to one of the sons on his horse for a half hour as the sun set over the Strawberry Mountains. ||||There were two double beds in the front unit and one bed and a pullout couch on the back one, which was vacant when we were there. We hadn't made reservations but we were served a nice oatmeal, juice, and muffin breakfast.

We were a bit hesitant to stay here since there were only 2 Tripadvisor reviews - but thought we would take a chance & stay at least 3 nights/days out of our 2 week vacation and we are SO happy we did!!! Wish we had stayed longer! The other reviewers were right on - 6 miles (easy, flat road though) from the small town of Prairie City - which actually makes it much more delightful!! You are in a charming converted old schoolhouse that is beautifully decorated like the old West! COMFORTABLE beds - we stayed in front room (2 double beds) with nice kitchen (mini-fridge, microwave, coffee maker, dishes). We loved the mini-fridge as we would wake up to go to all-day hikes early each morning to Strawberry Mountains & we would prepare our sandwiches the night before & store them in fridge.||||The proprietor (Judy) is the hard-working, energetic wife of a many generation cattle rancher. She is a retired (young!) school-teacher that used to teach in Prairie City - so had a personal interest in converting the old schoolhouse to a marvelous new bed & breakfast. Her love of the place shows in everything in it - spotless & wonderful decorations. She even kept the original chalkboards in their place & have them as a sort-of headboard to the back of each bed. It can get cold at night in this area - so she has floor heaters in the bathrooms which worked well. Wonderful warm, comfortable beds. Slept like babies!! (Well, except for 10 mins when we found racoons were scrambling up back porch - we just turned porch lights on & they ran off! Hey - you're in the country after all!) If you are staying in the late Fall/Winter/early Spring - she has modern room heaters in each room which can be used in addition (we didn't need them - but greatly appreciated bathroom floor heaters). ||||Judy was so friendly and accommodating - she knew we liked getting up early - so we said we didn't need breakfasts. She said she had some homemade granola and pastries that she would like to give us at a minimum & fresh fruits. Yummy - insane good granola & pastries. ||||Also, we made it back for dinner two nights in Prairie City - went to Maria's Traditional Mexican Restaurant. WOW. We are from Chicago area with loads of the "good, bad, and ugly" Mexican restaurants & are picky about our Mexican food - didn't think we'd find anything close to good in Prairie City. Guacamole fantastic/fresh - none of the food greasy - excellent! Great, friendly service. We loved it so much went there both nights. ||||All in all, this was our favorite part of our 2 week trip to Central Oregon area. Beautiful owners, beautiful place, and beautiful country. We will be back!

This B&B was once a two room schoolhouse. It sits on a couple of acres alongside pastures and the John Day river. We sat out on the back porch after a dinner in Prairie City, about 5 miles away, and listened to the doves, river and cattle. A truly country setting away from town with views of the snow capped Strawberry Mtns. My wife wanted to spend the summer here. Judy told us about the history of the school house and how it was moved to it's current location many years ago. We choose to stay in the back half of the school.. When you stay here, you have the entire "school" to yourself with either the front room or back rooms. There is a tiny kitchen area with sink, coffee maker and tiny refrigerator. Our bed was comfortable. Breakfast was brought in from Judy's home, across the street. Our breakfast was homemade breads, cinnamon rolls, orange juice, coffee, and a fresh fruit parfait. All very good.

This is a B&B in a remodeled two-room schoolhouse situated along the John Day River. The flavor if the old schoolhouse is retained, but the place has been fully renovated and upgraded for comfort. We were so lucky to hear about it! If you are looking for peace and quiet, spacious, comfortable accommodations, and a gracious hostess who delivers gourmet breakfasts, this is your B&B. We stayed two nights, and we were charmed. Everything about it worked for us....we were left alone to enjoy the sounds of the nearby river, the mountain views, and the cows who roamed the adjacent pasture. One caveat: the inn is 6 miles from Prairie City, which is not much of a hotspot and closed up pretty tightly on Sundays. Get directions from Judy, the innkeeper; Google Maps may not be accurate when you visit.

A friend suggested we stay here and we gave it a try. It's about 6 miles from the town or Prairie and, as the name suggests, in an old one-room school house. It's situated on the John Day River and has great views of the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness area.||||The rooms were huge! It is decorated in cowboy/ranch, which makes sense, as the owner is a 5th generation cattle-rancher. Each room had a comfy double bed, nice chairs to lounge around in, and a kitchen table. We were the only guests, so we opened the doors and had a doube room. The owner generally tries to rent out to one client at a time, and uses the double for larger famililes.||||It's all very casual. When we arrived, there was a note on the blackboard" "Welcome. Gone to Bend. Come on in."||||The breakfast was great, as fresh fruit picked in the morning was part of the fare.||||Judy, the manager/owner, is more than happy to fill you in on the history of the school house and cattle ranching.||||Be forewarned that it is somewhat out of the way. You'll have to drive to Pararie or John Day for dinner. ||||But nights are peaceful and starry, and you'll enjoy sitting outside watching the horses graze and the sun setting on the mountains.

Amazing place. The sounds of the John Day River are just steps away. The horses in the pasture along the school were so cool. They were always there to greet us. Views are amazing! The old school house is still intact....chalk boards and bell.
