Me and my dad went here for dinner. We ordered their special of the day which was bowl of French onion soup along with a pineapple-teriyaki burger and fries. We were quite surprised with the French onion soup which had a sweet aftertaste. When we inquired with our server, they mentioned that the soup had Coca-cola mixed in with it. We told them to send our compliments to the chef because it was very tasty! The burger was also well done and delicious. The atmosphere inside was very cozy with many people starting to come in for dinner. A nice place for dinner in the downtown area.

We ordered the steak and meatloaf meals, as always the meatloaf, potatoes with green beans was delicious but the steak just didn’t taste cooked properly. When I tried a bite it lacked seasoning where as my guy just said it wasn’t cooked properly.

I haven’t been by recently but I have always enjoyed Recess. I often used to get their meatloaf or a burger (which my husband got tonight and loved.) this evening, I got the garlic parm fried chicken thighs with Brussels and Gouda grits. It was the best meal I have had in quite some time! Can’t wait to come back!

Good spot with a fun menu. Service can sometimes be a little on the slower side but that's because they can get pretty busy. Staff is friendly and the food is good, but a bit pricey. I don't drink but the bar area seems pretty neat. Parking is no longer an issue now that downtown Gainesville has parking decks and road work is done with. Can get a little loud inside depending where you get seated.

Cute spot with exposed brick. Service was good. Unfortunately the food was not to my liking. Had the fish and chips. Fish had absolutely no seasoning or flavor and was overcooked. Fries were overcooked. The server offered another side option and I chose what I was told were roasted red potatoes however they were fried. Again overcooked and no seasoning. My husband ordered the recess burger and sweet potato fries which he enjoyed. I didn’t care for the beer mustard on the burger and the fries were mediocre. I left this place still hungry.

One of my favorite places to go when in town. Killer burgers, killer steak, by far the most personable staff. Chris, the owner, takes care of his customers and treats everyone that walks in like family. A must go if you are around the area!!

Went in and sat at the bar. Katrina took care of us and we had the best service we have had in a long time. Made us drinks that we loved to suit our taste, and recommended the special which was amazing. We will definitely come back and see her.

I’ve been to Recess 4-5 times over the last few years—it has been one of my favorite local restaurants in Gainesville. Tonight was a huge disappointment, however, especially since I had built it up to the guests we took there. The calamari appetizer was left in the fryer way too long—hard with very little taste. One of our guests had the fish and chips—same thing—the fish and the fries were way overcooked—you could tell immediately when the server set the plate down—everything was very dark in color. I had the fish tacos with grilled mahi mahi—the fish was cold in the tacos, and the side of Gouda grits was lukewarm. I was so disappointed in the quality of our experience tonight that I won’t go back. There are too many new restaurants in Gainesville with much better quality for me to waste my money on such a marginal meal.
