Key Features of the Inn

Accommodation and Rooms

The Inn on Summer Hill offers a range of accommodations designed to cater to different preferences. Guests have access to several rooms, each thoughtfully decorated to provide a comfortable and inviting space. Among the rooms available is Room 10, which offers a direct ocean view, making it a favorite for many visitors. However, as noted in some reviews, the view from Room 10 is partially overshadowed by the 101 freeway, which can be a drawback for some guests. Despite this, the room itself is praised for its cozy ambiance and comfortable furnishings.

It is important to note that some guests have pointed out certain maintenance issues, including a notably slippery shower without a grab bar, which can be a safety concern. Additionally, the coffee maker in some rooms has been reported to not function optimally. While the inn management may address these issues, potential guests should be aware of these points when making their booking decisions. Nonetheless, the overall experience is enhanced by the staff's attentiveness and the charming town atmosphere that surrounds the inn.

Facilities and Amenities

The Inn on Summer Hill boasts several amenities that elevate the guest experience. One of the standout features is the on-site hot tub, which provides a perfect relaxation spot after a day of exploration. Guests particularly appreciate the opportunity to enjoy the hot tub, especially as part of the inn's nightly wind-down routine. Beyond the relaxation facilities, the inn also hosts special events, such as wine and cookies gatherings, which add a touch of community and warmth to the stay. These events not only offer delightful social interactions but also provide guests with a glimpse into the local culture and traditions.

The surrounding area is another significant draw. Summerland itself is a cute little town known for its laid-back vibe, local eateries, and proximity to the beach. The town's atmosphere complements the inn's offerings, making it an ideal base for a variety of activities. Whether guests are interested in beachcombing, hiking, shopping, or simply enjoying the coastal scenery, the location offers ample opportunities. Furthermore, the inn's central position makes it convenient for day trips to nearby attractions, including the famous Surfrider Beach and the scenic beauty of Point Conception.

Transportation and Accessibility

Reaching the Inn on Summer Hill is straightforward for most travelers. The inn is easily accessible by car, with ample parking available for guests. For those driving, the inn's location on Lillie Ave makes it convenient to navigate using major highways. The closest major airport is Santa Barbara Municipal Airport (SBP), which is approximately a 20-30 minute drive away, depending on traffic conditions. Public transportation is less developed in the area, so renting a car or using a ride-sharing service is highly recommended for guests arriving by these means.

For guests concerned about noise or traffic, it's worth noting that the inn is situated near the 101 freeway. While this proximity offers quick access to other parts of the county, it can also mean some level of traffic noise, particularly during peak travel times. However, for many guests, the trade-off is well worth it for the convenience and scenic beauty the area offers. The inn itself is set back from the main road in some cases, helping to mitigate noise issues for most rooms.

Guest Experience and Ratings

The Inn on Summer Hill has received positive feedback from numerous guests, reflected in its 4.3 out of 5 rating across platforms. Many visitors highlight the friendly and accommodating staff, who are noted for their attentiveness and willingness to assist with local recommendations. This personal touch is a hallmark of the bed and breakfast experience and contributes significantly to the overall satisfaction of guests.

Special events hosted by the inn, such as the wine and cookies gatherings, are frequently mentioned as highlights of the stay. These events not only provide delicious refreshments but also create opportunities for guests to connect with one another and with the inn's hosts, fostering a sense of community during the visit. The on-site hot tub is another amenity that guests consistently appreciate, offering a serene escape after a day of exploration.

While the majority of reviews are positive, some guests have provided constructive feedback regarding certain aspects of the inn. For instance, a few reviews mention that Room 10, despite its ocean view, faces the 101 freeway, leading to noise issues, particularly at night. Additionally, concerns have been raised about the slipperiness of the shower and the lack of a grab bar, which could be a safety concern. Another common point is that the coffee maker in some rooms does not function properly, which can be disappointing for early risers.

In response to these comments, the inn management may periodically address maintenance and room updates to improve the guest experience. However, it's advisable for potential guests to consider these factors when planning their stay. Despite these minor drawbacks, the Inn on Summer Hill remains a popular choice for those seeking a relaxing and memorable vacation in the beautiful Santa Barbara County area.

We had room 10 facing the ocean but it also faces the 101 freeway so a little disappointed. Pretty noisy at night with the freeway. I can sleep through anything but still. Beware of shower 🚿 because it’s very slippery and doesn’t have grab bar. Coffee maker didn’t work very well in the room either. The staff was very nice and it was a cute little town, but rooms could use some updating!

We stayed in January (low season) and everything was perfect. I loved the special events like wine and cookies, and the hot tub was very nice.

Room 16, August 22nd, 2024|My take is that the rooms are nice, not spectacular. The ocean view is good, not amazing looking over the 101 and construction equipment. You have to know that this place is extremely noisy 24/7 with trucks and vehicles on the freeway, all night! If you want to leave your balcony window open to get the sea breeze, you MUST wear earplugs in order to sleep at all. And sitting at sunset with a nice glass of wine is not very relaxing having the diesel semis roar by a couple hundred yards away. They provide a noise sound machine for a good reason. That is the only drawback, but it's a big one. A deal breaker I'm afraid. The small bites offered from 4-5:30 were small, just like the title. For the money ($400/night) there are many other options in that range that don't have the horrible noise issue. I would say that the Inn On Summerhill should be around $250 max. The town is cute, the Nugget is a fun local bar, boutique shops. The employees know the "Elephant in the Room" is the freeway noise, and I'm sure people have asked for a refund after a sleepless night, so be prepared if you are dead-set on staying there. jr

Nice view and nice location in the swanky Summerland area of Santa Barbara. But be aware that there is a road, noisy highway and train track close by, and between the motel and that great view. The highway and train track are busy day and night. For one of us, this was OK; for the other it was a rough night's sleep, even with earplugs. (Mr. Earplugs is your reviewer....)||We found the overall vibe of this place a bit rustic and "beachy." I've chosen the word "motel," above rather than "hotel" to indicate something quaint, but also at the bottom end of what I'd consider a four star class boutique experience.||Service on the phone and at the property ranged from cold & competent to slightly warm, but never truly welcoming. We'd say our room was "as advertised" in that it matched the pictures and specifications, but do look closely: This is an older property with mid-tier upgrades. Cleanliness of the room was very good, save for a few bug carcasses near the base of the toilet. ||We did not eat the in-house breakfast, but the little breakfast room with chef serving directly from the adjacent kitchen looked lovely. We had other plans, but the desk person kindly told us we could dine in, even though we had not ordered ahead. Nice.||At $528 total for one night during winter, our stay did not feel like a particularly great value. But others may find the location and view worth the price. We were generally satisfied, but would not pay that again for the overall experience we had.

We stayed here on sept 1st 2024: checked in at 9:00 pm & checked out the next day around 12:30ish pm.

Cons:
1. OVER PRICED: we made a late booking & arrived @ 9 pm. The price for one night was almost $700. I mean we needed a place a crash. The prices are ridiculous.
2. It’s right in the ROAD, extremely noisy, cannot leave windows open, even though the beach is behind the busy loud road. It’s a shame because I could see the water and it looked very nice but couldn’t enjoy due to heavy traffic blocking the beautiful water view.
3. Weird keys- they don’t explain how to lock the door and expect us to know how to. The phones don’t work so you have to walk to the front office to get help or if you have any questions.
4. Breakfast for $700 a night was disappointing, but we still enjoyed. The potatoes were decent. My daughter enjoyed the muffins I asked for more they said they don’t have any. They took our limited items not a lot.
5. Here is where it got really bad for us 🙁
My sister got sick from the trip, not from the hotel, had severe migraine and started vomiting. She couldn’t get out of bed to get ready & check out at 11 AM. I walked to the front desk and MURISA was working and asked her politely if we can check out late because my sister is very sick. She said no. We have someone coming in. If you check our late it’s $25 fee. I said no accommodations for a sick guest? She said no! If room was not occupied I could have. I left politely and said ok I understand. I told my sister don’t worry I will pay the late fee. She was in very bad shape where I felt like I needed to take her to urgent care. She decided to close her eyes and rest and take meds! We checked our 12:30ish and guess how much she charged me? $50. 😣🥲. Again I asked politely, could you please be a little more understanding, she said best she can do is bring the late check our fee to $35 from $50. I said ok! I just wanted to be done with this place. I paid $35 cash and we checked out and returned the keys.
Later I asked how much it would cost if we stayed for one mor night. She said oh the guests I mentioned can stay in another room, they didnt mention that they have to stay in a room with 2 queen beds. Once she told me th price for 2nd room I said it’s okay I will pass. But do you guys see the lie? She couldn’t forgive the last check out fee because she lied and said someone is coming into the room.

6. Guess what happens next? I get a text FROM LAURA that the DAMN bathroom mat is missing and we will be charged… per housekeeping. While I am driving my sick sister back home I had to call them to say “THE ROOM DID NOT COME WITH BATHROOM which is why we used a big towel to avoid slipping after shower”. She said, the housekeeping takes pictures after each guest leaves as proof. I told her. WE DID NOT steal a bathroom floor mat. I mean are they kidding me? Who would steal that disgusting item anyway? If I was a their I would taken something better. I was offended by them. Extremely disrespectful offensive!!!! I am now stealing bathroom mat? I mean if I am going to steal I would steal something else but no thanks I didn’t even use their cold water !!!

7. Last but not least, we got charged for deposit. $100. They ask for deposit and it does hot to account. I called back to ask about it and they said it will go back 3-5 business days.

I NEVER ever leave negative reviews and take the time to actually write such details unless someone really deserves it. And I want to help those who are shopping to a room in this area to make a better choice. I am very disappointed and amazed and sad at this treatment. And it wasn’t even cheap.

Pros: the beds are comfy and the bathroom was decent and I felt comfortable with cleanliness over all. I also liked being close to water even though CARS ruined it I still tried to take it in.

It’s a still NOT worth it.
I will talk to everyone I know to never stay here and am spreading the word around.

Positive: "" Negative: You advertise a Bed-and-breakfast and it always has been and now you?re serving cereal and you have to come into the dining room. It just wasn?t the same. We have stayed there many times and have always enjoyed ourselves. That little bit is missing

This Hotel is a total scam. I canceled my reservation 10 days before my stay. I was still charged a fee of $339.00. They basically told me to bad you didn’t cancel the reservation I have all the documents. I guess they need the money more than I do. Be careful with this hotel. There are tons of better hotels in Santa Barbara that I would recommend

We spent four lovely days here. We enjoyed all the staff we met-Laura, Sophie and chefs Jesus and Angel. The rooms were furnished perfectly with a rustic coastal feel. The beds were so comfortable and the down linens made everything f so cozy. We stayed on the first floor with a view of the garden and the ocean in the distance. We loved our professional massage therapists, and the restful, quiet vibe of this well cared for place.
