everything was covered with dust. room had not been properly cleaned in quite a while. select treats did not exist. they were late to my appointment and still had to make up room.tv had service canceled and new one not yet started. total not as advertised. no decaf coffee which was a medical necessity. only enough water in cooler for one day.

The Gilchrist Guesthouse shows sounds of continual improvement! Almost three years ago, the guesthouse transferred ownership and the current owner is taking pride in the house and improving the guest experience! I have stayed here three times already and I have not been disappointed. Each room has its own charm - Room Two has a kitchenette, Room Three has a large bathroom, Room Four has a second bed; no matter what your need, the Gilchrist Guesthouse can accommodate. Breakfasts are ready by 8:00 am, with coffee brewed by 7:00 am, and the breakfast is homemade each day. The last time I stayed here, breakfast was strawberry or banana crèpes. The house is located within walking distance of the lake and to downtown. When I stay in Vermillion, there is only one place at the top of my list to stay - the Gilchrist Guesthouse and Bed & Breakfast!

Overall, this was a good experience. Excellent location very close to the Main Street Beach/Lighthouse and within easy walking distance to the shops downtown. Despite being a "B&B", the owner doesn't live on the property and there is no breakfast available in the house (we did find a $15 gift card to a restaurant downtown in our guestbook, though we passed on that as it was pretty much doughnuts and fast-food type breakfast sandwiches). Wasn't crazy about not having the owner on site--or the late check-in time of 4:00 p.m. (and we couldn't get in a minute sooner). Kinda weird set up inside. The bedroom was pretty tiny and claustrophobic, though the bed was very comfortable. Funky, streaming only TV with no local channels.

Stayed here several times. The house is wonderful with a rich history. The hospitality is first-class. And the grounds are amazing. We love being right on the lake! We highly recommend the Gilchrist Guest House It is much more comfortable than a hotel and it’s great when you travel with the whole family!

Syd was a wonderful host. We enjoyed our spacious clean room with a sitting parlor and breakfast the next morning. This was within walking distance to Chez Francois and also to the beach. We will return and always try to book at Captain Gilchrist.

On 8/24/22 my husband and I stayed one night in the Stern Room. A week prior to arriving, I called the B&B to request earlier check in than the 4:00 pm stated. The owner Sid, agreed since that was the only room that was not occupied the night before. AND he would text me if something changed. Since I did not hear from him – I texted him twice while in route to Vermillion – but no answer back, so I called him. He told me he was not there to let us in – and he would be at the house 4:30 the latest. Turns out he owns another company and the B& B seemed to be a part time thing. Upon arrival – we found that no one had occupied any of the rooms the night before, and the only reason we could not get early check in – he would not be on site to let us in.||Upon our arrival we were shocked to see the condition of the property. The first thing you see is the front door- which was filled with cob webs and spiders – the entire front porch, swing and chairs were the same. Including the chairs outside by the fire pit. A complete lack of care or pride in the place. Interior of the house is completely run down and in need of a through cleaning. Ceilings were all water stained. All windows were filthy and the shades did not work. The only tiny fridge in main room was dirty & not cleaned, no wine glasses, no complimentary water bottles and NO BREAKFAST – hello it’s a Bed AND Breakfast. They give you a coupon to go to a local coffee shop (NOT a sit-down eggs and pancake place) AND – the coupon is one $15.00 coupon for two people. And the coffee shop does not tell you that once you buy one thing on the coupon and there is – say $8,00 left and you want to get something else, once the first transaction is charged – the coupon is closed out and you lose the remaining money. We were told by the coffee shop that Sid was adamant on that policy. This was by far the worst place – hotel or B&B that I have ever experienced. It should be shut down. Don’t stay here! I have also learned a valuable lesson on reviews – don’t trust them. Should have scrolled down further and read the review on Jan 2018.

This review is difficult because I’ve stayed at this location in 2020 and enjoyed my stay very much. This time I was very disappointed. It all started with my arrival. Email confirmation said checkin was at 4 PM. By 5 PM I received a call asking when I would arrive because the manager had somewhere to be. Next the facility was dingy. The sitting area ceiling is in need of repair from water damage. The bedding smelled. I had the Galley room and there were crumbs on the tablecloth. The facilities seemed worn and not cared for.||This is a Bed and Breakfast (B&B). They only have breakfast available on the weekend. On Saturday, I chose not to eat breakfast. I then received a text in the afternoon, asking about whether or not I would have breakfast on Sunday. It was very off putting because it is part of the cost for the room.
