Linda and Ron were fantastic hosts! We had a fresh, 2-course breakfast every morning. The house is incredibly charming, and we loved our stay.

Some pleasant surprises awaited us at our Tuesday, March 15, 2016 stay at historic Downing House, built in 1859 and renovated to open as a B&B in 2003. From 1899-1914, Major John B. Downing, a riverboat captain who befriended Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens), lived there. We were in town to do genealogical research nearby. The home has been beautifully restored with refinished hardwood floors and many original features. It is a clean and comfortable retreat. The entrance is on Middleport’s main street with free parking in the driveway. The downtown has many quaint historic buildings. Local traffic diminished after dark and didn’t bother us in the spacious Becky Thatcher room upstairs. Our private bath had ample counter space. The feminine décor in our room included a wedding gown on a dress form, parasol, and a dressing table with mirror. Co-owner Mary Lou was on site and she prepared a delicious morning meal with fruit, yogurt, juice, coffee, and a hot breakfast casserole. We understand the area is popular in the summer, so advance reservations are a must.

This is a beautiful home and is on the National Register. The owners bought this 1859 home and restored it. You can tell it was a labor of love! They have done a remarkable job. The original features are evident. It is roomy and comfortable. The bedrooms are appointed with antiques and are named for some of Mark Twain's characters from his books. This is a roomy, comfortable home. The hosts are very hospitable and accommodating. They even have a wonderful antique shop next to the home. I recommend this home as a great place to stay if you are in the area. You will not be disappointed!

When the Matriarch of our family passed and we needed to travel to the small town we began to look at places 25 - 30 minutes away.|We were pleasantly pleased to find the gem across the river in Ohio.|We contacted the owners and they responded with open arms. When we arrived they were very welcoming and gave us the tour of the house.|We stayed in the Becky Thatcher Room, we loved it. Very comfortable, with it's own bathroom. |Other rooms were quite beautiful, though they shared a bathroom.|We look forward to staying again in the near future. |Breakfast was awesome!

The Downing House B&B sits right on the main street of a small town on the Ohio River. It was built in 1859 by Major John B. Downing who was a riverboat pilot and a friend of Mark Twain. The different bedrooms (4 upstairs and 1 downstairs) in the house are named after characters in Mark Twain's books. ||||The house is on the National Historic Register and you can really "feel" the history!||Don't miss the very nice Antique Store that the owners have adjacent to the house. You'll see their antique touches thoughout the home.||||The home has three separate "parlors" that you can enjoy relaxing in. One of the best part of staying in an old home like this is to be able to have the space to relax and visit. We would definitely recommend The Downing House to anyone!

We loved our stay at the Downing House B&B. The house has so much history and has been beautifully restored. Prices are more reasonable than if you stayed in a nearby motel! If you are going to be anywhere near Meigs County, OH, you must stay here!
