We spent 3 days at Cochise Stronghold at the end of May and would warmly recommend the B&B to anyone who likes nature and to be off the beaten path.||Nancy and John Yates are great hosts, and the Agave Suite where we stayed is roomy and very comfortable. The breakfasts were absolutely glorious, and the wildlife is plentiful just seen from the patio (the feeders attracts numerous birds, deer visit regularly, as well as Nancy's chickens...).||This is the perfect place to fully relax for a few days in a beautiful natural setting. We thoroughly enjoyed our few days in Cochise Stronghold.

My wife and I could not have been more pleased with our decision to stay at the the retreat. Everything about our time there was wonderful and the accommodations where fantastic and hidden away in one of the most beautiful canyons in Arizona. They really thought of everything and put a touch of class and care into everything that was there. If you order the breakfast you will be dinning like kings, the food was amazing. We had a Peach mesquite smoothie one morning with everything else and it was just great. The beds were first class, everything was clean, comfortable, and well thought out for our stay. I could have stayed there a few weeks and not felt out of place. Loved the Hot tub under the stars, and the meditation Yurt in the mornings. Even was able to get the travel laundry done and air dry it on the line. This will be our reoccurring getaway for sure.

Nancy Yates was welcoming, the breakfast sublime (the cornbread is a must) and the scenery and hiking trail are terrific. A great experience, particularly if you are looking for a quiet and remote experience. We stayed in the Agave suite, but either of the suites are equally lovely.

You will leave a part of your heart behind when you drive away from this serene desert valley in the fabled Dragoon Mountains. Stony, lichen-topped mountains glow pink, gold, and green at dawn. Deer glide past your patio in morning sunlight. A fat hen peers through the door. Birds congregate around the many feeders, perch on rails, and flit through trees, Outside at night, you are alone with the Milky Way, a million stars, and a pair of plump, silent cats brushing by in the shrubbery. That’s the setting for the unique accommodations created by Nancy and John Yates. Their innovative adobe-inspired suites combine ecologically advanced building techniques with a traditional southwestern look and feel. (For something different you may choose a yurt.)|| The main building has two suites. On one side, the Manzanilla Casita is ranch-house style, with a long, comfortable living room that can be turned into extra sleeping space, separate bedroom, a full, well-equipped kitchen with views of the (usually) sun-drenched grounds, and a wood-burning stove. The smaller, pretty Agave Suite next door has a marvellous king-size bed near the patio windows, generous sitting area, and modest kitchenette with microwave. The bathrooms in both suites have old-fashioned clawfoot tubs with attached showerheads. (The mineral-rich water can be hard on long hair. I bring my own preferred shampoo and extra conditioner, though good quality natural products are provided.) The thick walls make for perfect quiet. Each suite has its own large, private patio. Decor in both suites is well-chosen southwestern/pioneer,with some items handmade by John. ||The huge & delicious hand-delivered breakfasts offer several choices and fed us most of each day. Mark your menu the night before & the trays will arrive at your chosen time the next morning. Don’t miss the cornbread baked in a cast-iron skillet. Great coffee grounds, coffee makers, and fresh cream will be in your suite when you arrive.||TIPS: Plan ahead - little shopping is available without driving out. You’ll want warm jackets for star-gazing. Flashlights are provided - locate them first off and don’t go outside at night without them. The scenic nearby trails are not difficult; if you want a more substantial hike, ask Nancy. Do take time for the well-labelled Nature Trail from the National Forest campground down the road. A trail from the B&B links to it. Very informative on the many distinctive native plants you’ll be seeing. Re the road: the last few miles once you leave the well-graded gravel road are Forest Service road: some ruts and bumps & at times some puddles; not a problem in our mid-size rental car. Drive slowly. Best in daylight. Read details on the website & print off their explicit driving directions. Remember GPS is unreliable in the valley, most cell phones won’t work there, and there’s no wifi at the Stronghold. (You won’t miss it a bit!) Any problems can be solved by the friendly people waiting for you. You’ll be so glad you came!

There is so much to love here: the lodgings, the food, the hosts, and the setting in the stunning Dragoon Mountains. John and Nancy Yates have created a peaceful and vivifying retreat that respects the environment and natural rhythms. Deer drink from the water troughs. Birds flit through the trees. Free-roaming, contented hens provide eggs for the huge breakfasts. Those generous and inventive breakfasts provide more than enough for us for lunch and later. Fresh-ground dark-roast coffee grounds await, ready to be brewed at any time of day. ||The two accommodations (we have stayed in both, but did not try the yurt) each have their distinct “personalities” and features. The larger Casita Manzanita has a large separate bedroom, and can readily handle extra guests in the comfortable, capacious living area. The full-size kitchen is well set up for preparing your own meals if you so choose, and features a breakfast counter and good views in two directions. Birds at the multiple feeders in the nearby trees can be viewed from indoors on soft couches, or from the table and chairs on the private patio. The wood stove is a special treat. The smaller but still spacious Agave Suite boasts a lovely king-size bed, with a wide view of birds weaving through the unique desert shrubs and trees or winging past the sun-splashed patio. Not to mention those occasional deer. The two suites share a common wall, but seem entirely separate due to the building’s unique, extra-thick walls, and the stonework separating the two patios. ||Every day is a a delight, with innumerable irresistible photo ops along the various trails. The trails are initially easy and well-trod, rising into winding pathways among imposing boulders. Longer hikes lead into the surrounding mountains. Check with Nancy and don’t start unprepared. The perimeter of the Coronado National Forest is a few minutes’ walk away. A moderately challenging trail starting from the gravel road near the park entrance heads up the mountain, becoming steeper, rougher, chancier and unmarked as you go. Rope climbers can be seen among the bald rocks nearer the summit. The mountaintops are many-hued from the various lichens - fascinating close up but especially breath-taking from your own backyard at sunrise.||The last few miles of the gravel roads leading into the valley are rather bumpy and at times puddled, but we have had no trouble (using ordinary rental cars). Importantly, print off the detailed driving instructions from the website and have them with you. Preferably, drive in daylight. Check the website or call Nancy if uncertain of conditions or needing more information re wifi (available, I believe) or cell phone use. Our Canadian-provider cell phone worked at higher spots just up the hill on the Nature Trail, though not inside the suites. Mostly, we chose to be out of contact with the everyday world, enjoying a halcyon space.

The room was clean and inviting, and the bird watching on the patio with our morning coffee or evening wine was an added bonus. We were there a few years ago in late March and rather enjoyed our stay. The hike over the pass is challenging and features some great views. Looks like several other good mountain hikes to be done from the campground area also.Read up on some Apache history before you go to improve your experience and appreciation of the area. There are quite a few rustic campsites nearby, the improved campground is fairly small but we had no problem showing up on a weekday and getting a site. There is a rugged gravel pass road about 15 miles south that is quite remote and brings you around to the west side of the Dragoon mountains, with rock climbing and rustic camping found there.

I got a real sense of Cochise and the Apaches when we visited this area. Lots of gorgeous rocks, remote, a few homes, hawks galore, and quiet. This is a great spot to take a picnic ( no restrooms so if nature calls find the closest bush) listen to birds, and go for a hike. The road was flooded after a recent rain so we couldn't get all the way to the campground.
