I'm writing this review to add to those voices who loved staying at the Abalone Inn, and who found Dona to be a sweet, thoughtful, and doting hostess. We came to Pt Reyes for a nighttime kayak trip and were looking for an affordable place to sleep. It is important to appreciate the AI for what it is - a taste of a time gone by, a chance to experience genuine Northern Marin local culture, and a somewhat fragile, 100 year old house. Yes, Dona does drill you about the 'rules' and I understand others are offended. I might normally be one of those, except we knew going in this was not a 'conventional' bed and breakfast. I reserved months in advance and she made me clear the rules with my wife before accepting my payment 🙂 Many people are enchanted by the authenticity of the location, and the genuine concern she is expressing for the other guests. It is a shared space after all, though each room as it's own private bathroom. I don't mind taking my shoes off to keep the noise down, and I don't mind being asked and reminded to lock the door when we leave. If you do, just don't stay here! Leave it for the chill folks who enjoy it for the unique experience it is, and can appreciate the charm. (I should add after returning late from the luminescence kayak trip we drank a bottle of wine to unwind and were smokers at the time. Dona was totally cool, just asking us to party on the 1st landing of the stairway rather than on the front porch).||I would go back. It is a great location for exploring the area.

My family of four deeply enjoyed our relaxing stay at the Abalone Inn. We watched the Harvest Moon set over the beautiful view of Tomales Bay Ecological Reserve from the spacious Victorian Wetlands Suite, then soaked in the cozy hot tub. Dona is the hostess and caretaker of this B&B, who introduced us to the setting, and let us be to enjoy ourselves. Although everyone was under one roof, our stay still was very private and quiet. Dona was extremely helpful; I left my engagement ring under the bed and she shipped it to me (all the way out to Boulder, Colorado)!! We will definitely be staying here on our next trip to the beautiful national seashore. Thank you Dona!

I stayed at the Inn for two weeks in May 2014 and will definitely be back! Donna is a wonderful person and hostess. She made me feel welcomed and like I was at home- clean, comfy, and quiet. Good beds, lovely living room area with outstanding view, and one of the most gorgeous gardens I have seen. Eco-friendly without being over-the-top, so I did not feel as if I was walking on egg shells yet was doing my part. Her muffins are to die for and each breakfast was very good. She is knowledgeable about the area and has a lot of information available.

This is a home with two rooms and a shared kitchen downstairs and private space upstairs including kitchenette and bath. Rental includes an excellent breakfast composed of fruit, great muffins, and either egg or yogurt. Donna is a warm and friendly host who is very present without making you feel that she is in your space. ||||We took the upstairs room for an extra $40 because we were expecting rain for one of our 3 days. It rained down and we spent a snug day enjoying the views from the windows, taking a walk to the deli when it was not raining and using the hot tub. ||||The other two days were spent on day trips to the nearby Pt Reyes National Recreation Area, and a trip into town of Pt. Reyes Station for a good meal. The Inn was a good central location for all of that. ||||I would recommend the upstairs that we took for a family with small kids any day.

Found this place late in the evening with my girlfriend, and stayed two nights. Everything the negative reviews have said is true, but it will still appeal to the more adventurous or tolerant. The proprietress is quirky and a little nuts for sure. So definitely stay in the attic suite, nod your head yes to the rather long list of rules and limitations, soak in the hot tub before curfew, enjoy the rustic furnishings, and don't be expecting a real breakfast in the morning! Either do like we did and bring your own food, or plan on heading to the Bovine Bakery. Make sure to check out all the photo albums, which illuminate the long and interesting history of the house and the owner..;-) Don't really see how she gets away with charging so much for what is not really a B&B, but whatever.......... we'll be going back once in a while..:-)

If you are looking for a genuine "Marin-style" accommodation consider Abalone Inn. Located in a charming 100+ year old house this Inn is a great alternative to those nameless/faceless motels and significantly less expensive than those fancy boutique properties that charge an arm and a leg. We stayed in the attic suite which was more like an apartment than a room - two large beds with a sofa between, full kitchen, large bathroom. Great view over the bay. The whole property has character. Host Donna was very warm and helpful, got us settled in with fruit and muffins, then left us to enjoy the quiet and privacy of the place. Some of the "unique" features are highlighted in other reviews, but we are not the fussy or demanding types and found the place perfect for what we were looking for. We would go back in a heartbeat.

Stopped on a whim since the property looks great on the outside. We stayed in the attic room which is spacious and cozy but over filled with antiques (?), tchotchkes, and lots of tiny lamps. No TV. It looked like it could use a little cleanup so you would actually be able to better enjoy the room. ||||There are lots of do's and don'ts, a big don't -- not being able to flush toilet paper in the toilet "because the pipes are so old". Small kitchen area if you bring your own food. Not much a breakfast -- a Costco type giant muffin, small Activa yogurt, and an apple all delivered the night before.||||It's really a quiet location and has a hot tub. The location was walking distance to a small market and pub/cafe. The hostess was friendly and there are a couple of cats wandering around so you have to leave the screen door closed. Overall it was ok but may try other places in the local area on next visit to Inverness.

The Abalone Inn is a beautifully romantic and scenic getaway.||Our hostess, Donna, and proprietor of the Inn, welcomed us warmly and graciously left us baskets of delicious local muffins and cheese and fruit each day.The rooms are very cozy, well appointed,and private with gorgeous views of Inverness and Point Reyes out every window. || We stayed in the top room.The gardens outside are lovely.The hot tub is very inviting at sunset and early evening.The setting immediately takes you away from the tick-tick-took world. We coudn't imagine a better vacation weekend.
