My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at this quiet retreat in the woods! I loved that there was no WiFi or tv to distract us and instead we spent our time having coffee on the deck enjoying the beautiful views of the woods. We saw lots of wildlife including deer and turkey. I didn’t see any evidence of uncleanliness or run down facilities as mentioned in some of the previous reviews? I’m really glad we decided to take a chance and see for ourselves! The owner was also very helpful and accommodating, she shared some great spots for dinner and best places to visit in nearby Amish country! We had a great weekend and would certainly recommend!

We were a large group of friends travelling from different parts of the country for a perfect reunion. However, at first while reading all the undesirable reviews we were quite sceptical of having a pleasing experience and we started off our journey with a low expectation about this Inn! ||As we all arrived and entered ‘The Lodge at Fair Oaks’ at night, it was a pleasant surprise for all of us! It is located in amidst of the woods and one gets to see a lot of greenery, hear chirping of the birds, feel the tranquillity of the woods with a well maintained backyard and a beautiful gazebo where you can sit and relax. The owner did an excellent job decorating it and putting up a lot of good antiques. The rooms and the restrooms were clean and the kitchen had almost all the amenities required for daily cooking. Everything seemed to be flawless for all of us and it was a relaxing and a fun filled weekend.||Though, one gets to see a lot of insects outside of the house, but it is quite common for places located inside the timbers! The house has a good backyard where we all spent a lot of time at the late hours of the night and it was totally safe outside. ||Mary the owner came to meet all of us the next day and was very friendly, informative and helpful.||The only two drawbacks which I found was for the temperature control -which could not be controlled by the guests and the owner only had the access. Also there was no provision for BBQ (which we all had planned for but had to drop it off as the grille were not well maintained).||Overall it was a wonderful and a comfortable stay for the adults and as well as for the kids, we would surely recommend this property to anyone who is planning to visit New Philadelphia and is in a big group.

Our group of 12 was celebrating a 50 yr nursing school reunion. Mary (owner) was great at handling our questions and making our stay pleasant both before and during our visit. The property is simply beautiful - set back in the woods, away from the sights and sounds of all but nature - even though it is only minutes from town, if you need anything at all! I cannot speak for anyone who might reserve only one room or two. But for a large group it was perfect to spread out, relax and not bother anyone, as with a normal hotel or B+B! This IS a house in the woods that is not lived in on a daily basis. Therefore, be aware that there MAY be the occasional critter or spider! (All normal!) And there is the minor annoyance of dampness and some mildew smell, especially in the lower level. Overall the house was very clean and well-kept. Everyone thought the beds were comfortable. It's not new or "fancy", but was quaint and decorated, in every nook and cranny, with items in line with the owner's taste. We enjoyed checking everything out! It was perfect for our group and several of our party said they wished we could come back again. Thanks, Mary!

My sister and I booked the Lodge for a family reunion over Christmas. What a disaster! I wish I had checked Trip Advisiors because it was even worse than these reviews indicate. My family was coming from all over the country and the first to arrive had been on the road for 2 days and arrived in the evening to find there were no towels. They called me and I called Mary thinking it had been an oversight, but NO, she told me towels were not included. You can only imagine my repsonse to that after being on airplanes all day and arriving after 10PM so we had to find a Wal-Mart to purchase towels. I have never heard of such a stupid thing in my life! In addition to the smell, sheets were left in the rooms and NONE of them fit the beds. The beds were full size and queen and the sheets were twin. She brought sheets the next day for the upstairs beds but the guests I the basement never got sheets. The owner held my deposit for a couple of weeks before returning it but I was prepared with before and after photos just incase. Never could get warm and couldn't turn up heat because it was a locked thermostat. Don't stay here, ruined our holiday and reunion.

Our stay at the lodge at fair oaks was excellent. First the woman running it was very helpful , telling us where the best restaurants and stores were. The building itself was beautiful and was in a beautiful environment surrounded by trees. We saw two deer and a wild Turkey. It is also very large and clean inside. I was told they would no longer run the business because her husband had passed away and several parties had invited large groups beyond the allowed maximum and damaged the place, then left bad reviews. ||I am telling you this place is gorgeous and very clean, worth the price for sure!||||||||||||Please ignore the account name it's my grandchilds.

We had a family wedding in New Philadelphia and were excited to find the Lodge on VRBO to rent as it could accommodate our family. 10 of us total. We were so excited to stay there as the pictures looked beautiful. Wow, were we surprised when we entered. ||||When we first walked in, we were smacked in the face with the smell of mildew. The smell only got worse as we went to the lower level. It was also very warm in the house. We searched for the thermostat controls, but they were locked. Not only were they locked, it was blocked out so we could not even see what the setting was. The furniture was old and worn. It looked like everything was found at a garage sale or flea market - and I don't mean the cool retro stuff you find a flea markets. This house is of considerable size, but it was crammed with worn furniture. Like it is a dumping ground. The bedrooms were okay. Some better than others, and same goes for the bathrooms. One bedroom had a very odd little kitchenette straight out of the 70's with a stove oven, sink, etc... it was weird (although the oven game in handy). One bathroom has been nicely remodeled (main floor hall bath) but the water pressure is very low. The downstairs has some serious potential to be a wonderful hang out place, but unfortunately the strong odor of mildew kept us from enjoying it. The whole house was damp. It is obvious that this is known to the owner as there was a dehumidifier running. One dehumidifier was just not cutting it. Maybe if the air conditioning was working properly, or even on, that could help. The kitchen is in major need of a renovation. The ovens were so so tiny we could not fit a regular sized baking dish. The fridge was very old and the ice maker did not work. The cabinets/drawers were missing handles, so it made it difficult to open. The only really usable outdoor space was the downstairs patio. It was pleasant enough, but the fire pit had a broken leg. We were still able to find a way to use it, but it should probably be replaced. The upstairs deck seemed to have too much deferred maintenance, and we were uncomfortable sitting on it as we were not sure if it was stable as it had peeling paint, and looked to have a lot of deferred maintenance. ||||The thing is, this house could be a real showstopper. It has a beautiful setting, beautiful bones great architecture, a wonderful setting, and good proximity to nature and the town center. It is in desperate need of a complete renovation. The mildew smell was so bad and the allergies were really kicking in. Some of our party had to leave and find a hotel due to this. The lack of working air conditioning was a real problem. It was warm and humid out and there was really no relief inside the house. Not what I would call a vacation house. There was also not one TV in the house, and no wifi. To pay over $1000 for 2 nights plus security deposit and cleaning fee -- I just feel as if was not worth it at all. The owner/manager, Mary, is not exactly what one would describe as hospitable. In fact, she was downright rude to elderly members of our family. We have yet to get our deposit back, and it doesn't look like it will happen anytime soon as the owner is claiming we left the house a mess and let the kids have a party. The "kids" are adults and we were all at the wedding. There was no party. There was no time for a party, and not only that, we don't even know enough people in this town to have a party. I can assure you, there was not a mess. Even if there was, what is the cleaning fee for? ||||Dislikes:||||Lack of working A/C||No TV||Bad water pressure||Broken ice maker||Mildew throughout, worse mildew in basement||shoddy cupboards||lack of and poor outdoor lighting||ovens were tiny||deck was in bad shape||||What we liked:||||location||setting||patio||so much potential||||If you are considering this place to rent, beware if you have allergies. Also, take photos of it as you enter, and before you leave. You will want/need them.

We booked The Lodge at Fair Oaks for a stay with our extended family. What was nice about the property is that it could easily house our enormous group and provided some decent common areas for us to congregate. ||||We were looking for a lower budget option and we found it with The Lodge at Fair Oaks, but you get what you pay for. ||||Still, we were surprised at a few things. ||||The general mustiness of the place was overwhelming. My wife and I along with our newborn were staying on the main floor but even then the smell of must and mould was overwhelming. The families who were staying in the basement had it much worse. We were down there a few times and if we had had a room in the basement we would've certainly been checking out, and into a hotel. We wouldn't be comfortable subjecting our newborn to the overwhelming mouldy smell. ||||My wife and I were stationed in the large "master bedroom" which included an ensuite bathroom and a small kitchenette. Having the fridge there was great for storing bottles for our baby but the sink in the kitchenette was plugged up the entire time we were there and would never drain. Although this room was maybe the least musty of all there was a pronounced, overwhelming odor coming from the closet which you noticed if you approached it too closely. We never opened the doors, for fear of our lives.||||Finally, we were concerned about the owner's dog which seemed to roam the property day and night. On this weekend in question, the owners were out of town and the dog roamed around by itself, humping every guest it could get its paws on. At first it was funny but it quickly became annoying and then dangerous when it began to go after the younger children. When we contacted the owner we were told to stick the dog in the pickup truck for the weekend... in 35C weather? ||||Also, watch out, this is the last place on Earth that doesn't offer free WiFi. There was no Internet here at all; inconvenient and surprising for us coming from Canada.

It had lots of rooms, sleeping areas, plenty of bathrooms, and ample outside space. There were plenty of spaces to retreat to be alone and the common space was very spacious. This was a great comfortable place for our group of 20 or so to retreat from the city. The only con was the decor was very odd. Random murals and decor that looked like the owner bought an entire thrift shop for $2. It was strange but not without charm.
